Dates Kalan is simple, quick and tasty veg side dish made with dates, yogurt and coconut. It is the perfect balance of sweet, sour and spicy flavors.

Ingredients:

  • Dates, pitted and chopped 6
  • yogurt 250 gm
  • Salt ½ tsp
  • Julienned ginger 1 tbs
  • Chillies, chopped 2
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  • Red chili powder 1 tsp

For paste:

  • Grated coconut 1/2 cup
  • Black peppercorns 10
  • Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp

Tempering:

  • Fenugreek seeds 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Dry red chilies 2-3
  • Sprigs curry leaves few
  • Oil 2 tsp

 

Method:
Cook together dates, ginger, green chilies, chili powder, turmeric in 1 cup water till dates soften. Make a paste of coconut, peppercorns and cumin seeds. Add this paste to the date mixture, simmer 2-3 minutes on low. Stir in whisked yogurt and cook just 30 seconds. Heat oil, add the tempering ingredients, add the coconut yogurt mixture, serve at room temperature or chilled.

Ingredients:

  • Potatoes, peeled diced and boiled 4
  • Green Capsicum, diced 1
  • Onion, diced 1
  • Ginger, grated 1 inch
  • Coriander Powder 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Red Chili powder 1/2 tsp
  • all spice powder 1 tsp
  • Salt 1 tsp
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Coriander Leaveschopped 1 bunch

Method:
Heat oil, add the ginger, onion and capsicum. Sauté for a few minutes then stir in the boiled potatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, all spice powder, red chili powder and salt. Cover the pan, turn the heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once done, turn off the heat, stir in the freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve.
